Albin Apps

Privacy policy

Updated: 2018-10-30

This privacy police is valid for all Albin apps, including web app and app for Android.

Connections to other networks and apps

On Albin you can send and receive messages to and from people on other connected networks, because Albin is connected to a federated network. It’s also sometimes referred to as the Fediverse. It consists of several third party servers and other apps.

The Fediverse is organized in so called instances, independent servers, operated by people with no connection to Albin Apps. The instance operators may, as described in the section “Information we collect”, receive some of your data and content. You recognize the instances by the domain, on the part that’s after the second @ in the username.

On the connected networks, the instance operators may be companies, organizations or private persons. They could be located in any part of the world and therefore obey different laws. If you’re concerned about this, you need to read their Terms of Service and Privacy policies in addition to ours.

The Fediverse could, in one way, be compared with email. When you send an email to another person, that persons email provider get some meta data. This receiving email-company can potentially read that meta data and the content of the email. For this reason, it’s not recommended to use email for anything secret. Likewise you should not use or other Albin Apps for anything secret.

It’s new and still experimental

Here on Albin Apps we’re treating this connection to the Fediverse as an experiment. We’re constantly evaluating if it would be better to turn these connections off. We don’t know yet what you and other customers prefer. The Fediverse model or the more traditional model? It’s perhaps a trade off between a wider network and better privacy. Your feedback and opinions on this topic are welcome. #fediverse

What information do we collect?

  • Basic account information: If you register on Albin, you may be asked to enter a username, an e-mail address and a password. You may also enter additional profile information such as a display name and biography, and upload a profile picture and header image. The username, display name, biography, profile picture and header image are always listed publicly.

  • Posts, following and other public information: The list of people you follow is listed publicly, the same is true for your followers. When you submit a message, the date and time is stored as well as the application you submitted the message from. Messages may contain media attachments, such as pictures and videos. Public and unlisted posts are available publicly. When you feature a post on your profile, that is also publicly available information. Your posts are delivered to your followers, in some cases it means they are delivered to different servers, independent from, and copies are stored there. When you delete posts, this is likewise delivered to your followers. The actions of re-posting or making favorites of posts are always public.

  • Direct and followers-only posts: All posts are stored and processed on the servers. Followers-only posts are delivered to your followers and users who are mentioned in them, and direct posts are delivered only to users mentioned in them. In some cases it means they are delivered to different instances/servers and copies are stored there. We at Albin Apps make a good faith effort to limit the access to those posts only to authorized persons, but other instance operators may fail to do so. Therefore it’s important to review the servers your followers belong to. You may toggle an option to approve and reject new followers manually. Please keep in mind that the operators of any receiving server may view messages, and that recipients may screenshot, copy or otherwise re-share them. Do not post or share any secret, sensitive, illegal or otherwise unsuitable information over the federated network, Mastodon, or other Albin Apps.

  • IP address and other metadata: When you log in, we record the IP address you log in from, as well as the name of your browser application. All the logged in sessions are available for your review and revocation in the settings. The latest IP address used is stored for up to 12 months. We also may retain server logs which include the IP address of every request to our servers.
